I've started selling some of my toys & collectibles. As both an eBay Partner and Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. |
I don't remember the Walking Penny Banks from my childhood but the first time I saw one, I had to try to buy it. Made by Tigrett Industries, probably from the 1960s, I spotted a clown version first but did not win the auction. The first bank I got in May, 2011 was the single ramp Mr. Dough Dumper, which it turns out is probably the most rare. The red-backed Mr. Dough Dumper is only the second one I've ever seen for sale and was purchased over five years later. The other five banks with triple ramps are more available and were produced with different designs and plastic colors. All of the triple ramp banks have metal backs and are No. 11-98. The single ramp Mr. Dough Dumper is all plastic and No. 11-1.00. There are no dates on any of the boxes. Near the end is the rarest Tigrett walking bank, the Walking Dime Bank, No. 12-1.00.
One of only a handful of walking penny banks made by a company other than Tigrett, the last clown bank on the page is an all-plastic model made by Avlon Inc., Stroudsburg, PA. While very cool looking, the bank just doesn't work as the penny stops near the end of the first ramp. I don't have the box so don't know a date or item number.
Last is the Donkey Kong themed walking penny bank by Superior Toys in 1982 which works very well. You have to use the lever to make Mario jump over the penny as it rolls down the ladder.
Other banks in my collection include: Candy Cigarette Banks by Miner-Matic, Coney Island Penny Machine by Remco, Chiclets Bank and Tootsie Roll Bank by Hasbro, Addams Family Thing and Great American Con Machine by Poynter Products, and Vend-O-Mat by Tell's Chocolate Novelites.
Here is a short video of my banks in action. It's pretty loud so turn down your volume.
